As part of the Wimbledon Master Plan launched in 2013, Wimbledon, All England Lawn Tennis Club, set out to enhance its world-renowned venue while preserving its rich heritage.

A major focus was the transformation of No.1 Court, originally opened in 1924 with a seating capacity of 2,500 and standing room for about 750 more spectators, Fast forward to 1997, the unveiling of the new No.1 Court marked a significant leap in capacity and design, accommodating 11,432 fans and setting the stage for future innovation.

The Club initiated a three-year refurbishment program with two key goals: install a retractable roof to ensure uninterrupted play, and increase seating capacity to accommodate more fans. This expansion was part of a broader effort to modernize the venues infrastructure, including new hospitality suites, upgraded facilities, and improved accessibility.

The client expected a seamless upgrade that would elevate the spectator experience while maintaining design continuity across the grounds. We had previously supplied Quantums for Centre Courts renovation, and the client wanted the same level of quality and comfort for No.1 Court. The new seating solution replaced decades-old chairs and delivered a significant improvement.

Solution

Following our previous success, we were invited back to help deliver the same level of excellence for No.1 Court, ensuring continuity in quality, comfort, and design across Wimbledons most prestigious venues.

Completed in early 2019, the No.1 Court refurbishment features Camatics round-back, padded Quantum chair, selected for its premium comfort, sleek design, and engineering versatility.

To meet the clients goal of increasing capacity, additional rows were added around the perimeter, resulting in approximately 900 new seats, bringing the new capacity to 12,400.

Quantum seating system offers substantial flexibility. Designed to last a lifetime, the system allows for quick reconfiguration, adjusting seat spacing or removing entire rows with ease.

This future-proof solution maximises every inch of space and gives the venue the agility to adapt to changing needs.
